In addition to the declared ingredients in Orphan Tears world class wines, there is a single proprietary ingredient that sets us apart from any other wine or spirit in history. Some find it intriguing and others find it reprehensible. Never the less, we are Orphan Tears. Our proprietary ingredient comprises 4% of our porduct by volume. The salinity is detectable to the palate, and the the depth of flavor is a matter of legend and tradition.
The Secret Ingredient
The Secret Identity
What is now Orphan Tears, began in 1914 labeled under the family name, which remains a guarded secret for obvious reasons. In 1917, a Chinese refugee named Liu Jeung Pei was taken on as a hired hand to the family vinyard. Liu, through his knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine, began adding his own steps and ingredients to enhance the winemaking process. The family learned of Liu's innovations, and in 1918, bottled the new recipe under the label Vin Lue. In 1920, Vin Lue changed labels once again, and is still produced today, so labeled for its namesake, Orphan Tears.
Orphan Tears is a French red wine produced and enjoyed secretly for 97 years using what is now old growth vines ranging in age from 45 to over one hundred years. Orphan Tears has always been produced on a small scale, only available for family use and given as gifts to close friends. Only now is Orphan Tears available for sale on a special allocation basis. 100 bottles of each vintage year are being released to select customers.
